5 Percentage Tricks for Everyday Life
Percentages show up everywhere — discounts, tips, interest rates, exam scores. Here are five quick mental-math shortcuts that make percentage calculations faster, even without reaching for a calculator.
1. Find 10% first, then scale
To find 10% of any number, just move the decimal point one place to the left. Once you have 10%, every other common percentage becomes easy: double it for 20%, halve it for 5%, and so on. For example, 10% of 850 is 85 — so 20% is 170, and 5% is 42.5.
2. Swap the numbers around
X% of Y is always the same as Y% of X. This sounds like a small thing, but it can make a calculation much easier. For example, 8% of 50 is awkward to do quickly, but 50% of 8 is just 4 — and they're the same answer.
3. Use 1% as your building block
Finding 1% of a number means moving the decimal point two places to the left. From there, you can build up to almost any percentage by multiplying. 1% of 4,200 is 42, so 3% is 126, and 15% is 630.
4. For quick discounts, calculate what you pay, not what you save
If something is 25% off, you're paying 75% of the price. Sometimes it's faster to calculate 75% of the price directly than to work out 25% and subtract it — especially for round numbers.
5. Percentage change is about the starting point
When comparing two values, the percentage change is always calculated relative to the original (starting) value, not the new one. Going from 50 to 75 is a 50% increase, but going from 75 back to 50 is roughly a 33% decrease — not 50% — because the starting points are different.
Using the calculator
Our percentage calculator covers all three common cases — finding a percentage of a number, finding what percentage one number is of another, and calculating percentage change — so you can double-check your mental maths instantly.
